Perfect For A Wedding

We had the pleasure of attending a small wedding at Tillmouth Park Hotel in Northumberland the other weekend. It was a perfect day for the loved up couple and the perfect venue for their wedding. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best of places for me!

No Attempt to be Accessible

If you have access needs, DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! Sorry to shout but the hotel is not accessible in any shape or form. They don’t even pretend to be, so at least they are honest but it really isn’t worth reading on if you can’t manage a flight of stairs.

But Lots of Positives!

I suppose they might argue that making the place accessible would ruin the place. For once, I might actually have to agree.

There are a couple of easy steps up to the entrance hall. Once there though, you are faced with a choice. Either up stairs to the public and dining rooms or downstairs to reception and the bar. The stairs cannot be avoided! That worry aside though, the hallway is spectacular. Roughly square, there is a very solid stair going up the right hand wall. It levels to a balcony across the facing wall before heading up again to the left. The balcony not only leads to a large public room with comfy leather sofas and a huge roaring fire, but also allows you to take in the hallway, large front door and a huge stained glass window above.

We spent our time on the first floor, initially in the lounge but then through to a private dining room to the rear of the building. This room opened onto a stone balcony with steps sweeping down to the garden. Perfect for photo’s.

The food and service were excellent. Plenty of staff to meet our needs and they were keen to please.

Everything But Access

If access wasn’t an issue, I’d be keen to go back and find out what the rooms were like. Apparently they have 14 varying in size from large to enormous and all decorated and furnished with period style. However, access is an issue so we won’t be going back!

It was a little disappointing that they didn’t make any provision at all. They did know we were coming and access was mentioned when the event was booked. The biggest problem for me was that the dining room was up stairs but the toilets were down stairs. When the venue was booked, staff said that there was a first floor bedroom with a toilet. Unfortunately though, they let out that room. Otherwise it would only have been necessary to go up the stairs once, staying there until it was time to go. This would have made a massive difference to my enjoyment of the day.
