Things haven’t really gone to plan since I started this site.  I’ve had a few medical problems that have got in the way a little!  Despite the the articles being a little thin on the ground though, the site gets a surprising amount of traffic.  I have also had a lot more correspondence with readers than I expected.  For some reason people seem to prefer emailing me directly rather than adding comments on the site but nevertheless there is obviously a need that people are hoping this site can fill.

Moving Forward

Now that I’m back on my feet, I’m very open to ideas about how to take this site forward.  One thing that I would be keen on is to increase the level of community involvement but there are a number of ways of doing this.  Of course, this also depends on the willingness of people to join in!

For this reason, I am hoping that some people will join in this discussion.  I would really like to hear more about what people think is currently missing.  There are lots of sites that try to offer the disabled community a voice and a place to talk to each other, but is something missing from these or could they do with being just a little more independent?

Ideas?

Just for starters, there are a number of ideas that could be developed further:

  • Using Forum software to create a place for people to discuss……well, anything really!
  • A Dig.com style site where members can share links and stories they find interesting on the net.
  • Creating a site based around the Facebook model.  Each member has a “Wall” that they can develop and share with others.
  • Creating a “Multi-User” Blogging system.  Anyone that’s interested can create their own site which can then be linked together into a network.
  • Creating a simple “Links Library” providing links that are useful to the disabled community as a whole.
  • ANY COMBINATION of the above plus YOUR ideas.

I have no vested interest here, I simply want to try and create something that the disabled community will find useful.  I think there is a general lack of support for disabled people, so maybe we just need to concentrate more on supporting each other.

One or Two Changes

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks slowly bringing both this site and ELPsych! together.  I’ve tried to link them together by similar branding and appearance but still leave them as two separate sites.

The chap that wrote the theme I’ve used has done an amazing job of creating a very versatile platform that is both easy to use and (I hope) easy on the eye.  Today he increased the options further by introducing a “magazine” style template.  I’ve used some of the options this opens up on the ELPsych! homepage but there is plenty more to come!

Link Libraries

There is now a similarly styled Links Library on both sites.  Obviously the emphasis is different, ELPsych! concentrates on Mental Health and DisabledPeople.org concentrates on more Physical Illness and Disability.  I would love these Libraries to become interactive spaces that can be used to share places that have been particularly useful to you.  If you would like to see links in these Libraries, please don’t hesitate to send me the address and anything you want to say on the description line.  Either use the comments area on the Library page or the Contact Form.
